Target Applications

The Optilux camera module is a small and compact design for use in both rear and front facing cameras into most smartphone & tablet platforms. The lens housing size is only 6.8mm x 6.8mm X 4.9mm for use with 8MP and 13MP sensor formats. Package includes dust cover, liquid lens, lens stack, housing, IRCF and sensor attached to flex and connector.

Advantages of Optilux Liquid Lenses vs. Voice Coil Motor

Significantly Low power consumption: Liquid Lenses will typically dissipate about 15mW, driver included, about 10 times lower than VCM, piezos or motors, resulting in much needed, longer time between battery recharge cycles.

Speed: Liquid reconfiguration can be as fast as tens of milliseconds. These time scales are well adapted to human interfaces, video, photo capture, etc.

Shock resistance: Under drop tests Liquid lenses behave much better than mechanical solutions like VCM. Repeatability of LL response curve is excellent before, and after shock tests. In a VCM system the lens is suspended to a soft spring, resulting in offset positions changing after every shock, causing increasingly degraded focus performance.

Robustness: Liquid lenses have been tested for over 30 million cycles without any performance degradations, while mechanical systems such as piezo, motors and VCM (Voice Coil Motors) are typically limited to a few hundred thousand cycles

The liquid lens is specifically ideal for mobile applications – smartphone cameras and tablet computers – where physical size constraints preclude the use of traditional technologies found in point-and-shoot cameras. Its low power consumption, high shock resistance and fast focus ability deliver outstanding performance. The liquid lens has been tested to actuate across its operating voltage for over millions of cycles.
